Interesting topic, I'd never thought about it allot before. For some periods of their career they probably had too much equipment to make going overseas feasible. I think they borrowed the Who's rig for Egypt. In later years they had such a following stateside they didn't want to neglect that market.

I do think the drug angle was a real factor. I think I read (Scully?)that one reason that Jerry consented to doing the Rockpalast gigs in Germany was because Townsend assured him he could easily score Persian while there. Who knows?
I'm glad they played plenty of shows where I could see them that's all I know : )
